Congressman Taylor Statement on Russian Threat to Target U.S. Coalition Aircraft Over Syria
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Taylor issued a statement in response to Russian threats to treat U.S.-led coalition aircrafts as targets if they are operating in Syrian airspace west of the Euphrates while Russian aviation is on combat missions. This threat was issued in response to the downing of a Syrian aircraft that had recently dropped bombs near Syrian Democratic Forces, with whom the U.S. military is aligned.
Congressman Taylor had this to say regarding the threat: “I have every confidence that the U.S. is capable of defending herself and her allies in the face of any Russian aggression. However, the situation in Syria concerns me because there is a great risk for escalation due to the many different forces and diverging interests at play in the region. At a time like this, the ability to deconflict is paramount, so as not to spark a broader conflict. Congress should promptly debate our role in this matter and in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Libya. This is the 2nd administration working off a 3rd administration’s 16 year-old Authorization of Use of Military Force, which is unacceptable.”
