Trump Accounts
What is a Trump Account?
Trump Accounts were authorized in the Working Families Tax Cuts, which President Trump signed into law on July 4, 2025. Each account is an individual retirement account (IRA) for children to begin investing for their futures. Trump Accounts officially became active on July 4, 2026. Up to $5,000 can be contributed to an account per year by a child's legal guardian.
Once the child reaches 18, withdrawals from the account may be made penalty-free for expenditures like buying a first home, college tuition or job training fees, or starting a small business. Children gain full control over the account at 18 years of age and have the option to transfer their Trump Account into a traditional IRA.
Who is eligible?
Children under the age of 18 with a valid Social Security number are eligible to have a Trump Account opened on their behalf. Kids born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028 are eligible to receive a one-time deposit of $1,000 in their account.
Up to 25 million kids nationwide who were born before January 1, 2025 may receive a one-time deposit of $250 if they are:
- 10 years old or younger at the program's launch
- Have a valid Social Security number
- Live within a zip code where the median family income is $150,000 or less
- 17 years old or younger for the entire contributions are made
