ICYMI: Congressman Taylor Talks Impact of Schumer Shutdown on Southern Ohio on Tim Young Show

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Dave Taylor (OH-02) joined the Tim Young Show yesterday to call out the harmful effects that the Democrat-led government shutdown is having on southern Ohio communities. Today marks the ninth day that the government has been shut down since appropriations lapsed on October 1, due to Congress’s inability to pass legislation funding government operations for the new fiscal year as a result of Democrat stonewalling. Congressman Taylor’s remarks from the Tim Young Show are available below.

On Democrats prioritizing reckless spending and illegal aliens over Americans

Congressman Taylor:

“Democrats wanted a clean, short-term CR, which is exactly what House Republicans passed three weeks ago. It’s clean, it’s short-term, and once we delivered that to them, Democrats decided they wanted to add a laundry list of ridiculous demands, including free health care for illegal aliens and added spending. The Working Families Tax Cut Act just got done cutting $1.6 trillion dollars in spending over the next ten years, and now Democrats want to spend $1.5 trillion in the next month and a half. It doesn’t make sense.”

Host Tim Young:

“Are Ohioans actually paying attention to this nonsense from the Democrats and saying, ‘Hey, enough is enough,’ and realizing that they want to be America First?”

Congressman Taylor:

“They are, Tim. My district is a very common-sense district. It’s very Appalachian and very agricultural. Schumer is putting hundreds of thousands of people out of a job in a desperate attempt to save his job. He is painting himself into a position where he might not keep it, no matter how he proceeds from here. It’s time to let the American people get back to work.”

On the impact on American farmers

Host Tim Young:

“Your district has a lot of farmers in it. How are they impacted by this government shutdown?”

Congressman Taylor:

“I actually just had breakfast with a friend of mine who is not going to work at the USDA, where he should be, because of the shutdown. It’s going to affect farmers a lot because they rely on so many USDA programs. Southern Ohio experienced a bad drought last year, and farmers need assistance. Out of all the assistance that was set in motion under the Working Families Tax Cut Act, no sector of American commerce received more help from it than farmers. This government shutdown throws a wrench into that at the worst possible time. Senate Democrats need to stop playing games with farmers’ livelihoods and open the government back up so our agriculture industry can keep food on our families’ tables.”

On the impact on rural health care

Congressman Taylor:

“There’s one other thing that hasn’t been discussed as much that is really going to affect my district. Democrats targeted the $50 billion dollars in the Rural Health Transformation Program money, which is vital in my district. All the hospitals here are basically rural hospitals. We have great hospitals, and the quality of care is amazing, but the distance between them is unacceptable. The situation in my district, health care-wise, is dire. So, the idea that Democrats are going to target those dollars that are long overdue to keep these hospitals viable and find a path forward for them that makes it sustainable in the long term, that was a particularly galling move in my opinion.”
